I usually use my registrar's free DNS service. (e.g. netfirms and internetbs). Why do people buy low end vps to set up their own DNS? Is it because registrar's DNS are overloaded?

No, I use free ones and happy with them, but they use external ones because they want control. There are many things that can be done with DNS and the providers only have the basic of the basic of all.
